Confused

If there’s one word that sums up Britain’s attitude to healthy eating it’s ‘confused’.

And it’s hardly surprising. Scarcely a day goes by without some new piece of research showing a particular food to be either super-healthy or guaranteed to take years off your life. Sometimes it’s the very same item.

On food labels the term ‘healthy’ seems to apply to pretty well everything. Processed foods are labelled ‘healthy’ because the manufacturer has halved the salt and sugar content or cut back the level of fat. But isn’t there more to the health-giving properties of food than this?

What about the sum total of the nutrients it contains – the minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, phytonutrients and the rest? Surely it’s these that make a food healthy – or not. Yet it’s these the labels seldom tell us anything about.

The same is true of fresh foods. Food guides may tell you that carrots are good for you, but not all carrots are the same. Depending on the way they’re grown – and the soil they’re grown in – some will have far more health-giving nutrients than others. If you’re interested in health you need to make sure you’re eating the good ones and not the ‘fakes’.
